The 2019 Jukebox Academy showcase presented a series of creative work from our emerging young artists. Directed by Liara Barussi, students worked with dance, music, theatre, set, costume and drama to produce a multi-disciplinary showcase that highlighted their individual talents.

Shakira fill’s personal piece was inspired by Japanese cultural traditions. Using beautiful props and costume, Shakira transported audiences to Kyoto, fusing the traditional with the modern ??

Jo-el Bertram took the stage with a minimal aesthetic. Black costume, dark lighting, powerful movement. He took inspiration from the Karate Kid movie and applied this to his movement. He also explored the relationship between mentor and student.

Renae Brito re-enacted Maddie Ziegler in Sia’s ‘Big Girls Cry’. Renae bravely chose to take on the iconic choreography of Ryan Heffington, through an emotional series of rapid-fire facial expressions.

Disjointed is the story of a wound-up mechanical Doll operated by the Controllers, who receive their instructions from The System. She’s the perfect entertainer, always smiling but with a deep sadness visible in her eyes. She longs for freedom, to move and express herself and to find where she belongs. Touching on ideas of connection and disconnection, control and the roles we play in society, the piece prompts us to consider the implications of new AI technologies and what it means to be human.
